Carpati movie posterCARPATI: 50 MILES, 50 YEARS focuses on ZEV GODINGER, a “proste” (ordinary) Jew who has a special friendship with his Rom (Gypsy) neighbors. In 1931 the Jewish community of the Carpathian region (then in Czechoslovakia, today Ukraine) numbered a quarter of a million Jews. Today sixty-five years later there are fewer than 1,500. Zev lives in Beregovo, only 50 miles from his birthplace. He had not returned since he was deported to Auschwitz in 1944. Now, Zev makes the journey home not only to revisit his childhood memories but to bring a Torah to his boyhood synagogue, which has not had a Torah for many years. Zev’s experiences and unique insights are representative of the rich Jewish culture that once thrived in the Carpathian Mountains. Directed by Yale Strom.

An Open Letter from producer David Notowitz:

DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO MAKE A FILM? AAAAAAHHHH! OK, that over, let me tell you about the film. Carpati, a feature documentary film, is narrated by Leonard Nimoy. Carparti had its world theatrical premiere May 24 – June 2 in Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater in New York. It is directed and co-produced by my friend and partner on this project, Yale Strom. The film got great reviews and I can say I am proud of our work. After the inital two week period, Carpati continued to open in two other theaters in Manhattan… We had three theaters playing Carpati at the same time! Return here for continuously updated information on the film’s schedule, and feel free to email me any questions you want or to check out the Notowitz Productions website.

This is a project that took me to Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains twice, once during the fall of 1994 during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, and again during the spring of 1995 during Passover. I spent a total of six weeks in Ukraine, and together with Yale shot over 50 hours of footage to weave into the 80 minute film that would become Carpati.

To see when Carpati comes to your town, check out our online schedule.

Tell your friends across town and across the country to go and see it! Word of mouth is always stronger than any advertisement we could possibly do!

Thanks and be well.

A special thank you for making this site possible to Michael Dunn, creator and manager of the Cybrary, for providing so much advice and support and patience as I designed and wrote the Carpati web site and for giving me space on his computer system to house the files. Also, thanks goes to the staff of Nizkor for currently giving me space on their system for housing Carpati.
