Location: Dachau concentration camp, Germany

Description:

By 1945, barracks at Dachau were often filled from 8 to 10 times their designated capacity. A typhus epidemic swept the prisoner population due to overcrowding, poor sanitary conditions, and the weakened state of the prisoners.

The prisoners slept on three bunks stacked on top of one another. During the outbreak, the person who slept on the top bunk had a life expectancy of approximately 3 or 4 months; the person in the middle could live approximately 3 or 4 weeks; and the bottom bunkmate, maybe 3 or 4 days. This was because they were often too weak to get out of bed at night, and the urine and fecal matter from one person simply had nowhere else to go but down to the next. Thousands died under these catastrophic conditions.
